Third Annual Bahamas Film Festival

The Bahamas Film Festival culminated its four days of activities with
an Awards Presentation Dinner on Saturday evening at The British
Colonial Hilton in Nassau,Bahamas. Suncher Johnson, President of
Toastmasters Club 7178 and Ivan Thompson, Toastmaster Area Governor,
hosted the event that was attended by The Film Commissioner, Craig
Woods and also staff from The Ministry of Tourism. The Family of The
late Kayla Lockhart Edwards was also in attendance and her husband Mr.
Desmond Edwards received posthumously a Lifetime Achievement Award on
her behalf. The Keynote speaker Mr. Neville Wisdom, Minister of
Youth, Sports and Housing, spoke on the growth of the festival over the
past three years. He lauded Mr. Celi Moss, President of The Bahamas
Film Festival for staying the course and told the audience of the
importance of supporting persons like Mr. Moss. He also presented the
guest of Honour Mr. Jeff Friday, (C.E.O of The American Black Film
Festival and of The American Black Movie Awards) with The Minister of
Culture Award for excellence in Film Making.
Mr. Friday pledged his support and promised to utilize his resources to
move the film festival forward. The Bahamas can look forward to visits
from the likes of John Singleton, F. Gary Gray and Spike Lee also added
Mr. Friday.
Some of the big winners for the evening were Mr. Charles Smith, for
both Best Music Video and Best Documentary. Aja Moss, for Best Actress,
Ricardo Forbes for Best Public Service Announcement, Nitro Filmz, Best
Short Film, Farreno Ferguson, Best T.V Show Award.
Earlier in the week, festival organizers held the official opening at
Galleria Cinemas, John F Kennedy Drive. Minister of Health Dr. Bernard
Nottage was the Keynote Speaker. He also lauded Mr. Moss for his
initiative in the film making industry and expressed his happiness in
regards to the timely topic that Mr. Moss chose to expose in the
premiere movie for the film festival. Survivor is a movie, written and
directed by Mr. Moss that tackles the topic of breast cancer. In an
interview shortly after the movie was shown Dr. Nottage said he thought
the topic was well executed, good acting and that it was a great story.
Mr. Moss thanks all of the persons involved, especially Mr. Terry
Fountain and the entire Cancer Society of The Bahamas. He also was
grateful to Senator Tommy Turnquest and The family of the late Kayla
Lockhart Edwards. Mr. Neville Wisdom was also lauded by Mr. Moss
for being a visionary and assisting with the creation of a Minister of
Culture Award. Mr. Moss expressed his desire to continue to work
with Mr. Wisdom in his capacity as the Minister of Youth, Sports and
Housing, but also looks forward to forging ties with the new Minister
of Culture.
A comedy show was held on Thursday, 10th August apart of the film
festival. Comedians Tre Luv, Dexter Angry were welcomed to The
Bahamas, they shared the stage with popular Comedian\Actor Mr. Don D.C
Curry. All of whom were here before. Local comedian Ivan ëShowtimeí
Francis opened the show that was hosted by Vivica ëMega Bí Watkins.
